Sands ability to absorb energy is proven useful for example in car racing. Studies of ballistic shots into sand show that sand can absorb more than 85% of the energy smashed at it, the ability increasing with the speed of the projectile. Sand barrels and sand cushions have saved lives at many race tracks. It has been a part of safety arrangements historically at events such as the San Marino Grand Prix, held in Italy as San Marino, with more cars than people, lacked a racing arena of their own.
