Local Sand Trivia

Grains of sand can be anything from minutes to billions of years old. If you want to greet newborn sand grains, head to any active volcano.  During eruptions sand, volcanic ash, and pyroclastic material are thrown out. Sandplains and black sand beaches can form almost overnight.  Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any other nation. Over 120 of the world’s active volcanoes are dotted around it.  The Bromo “Sea of Sand” is the result of one of them. It’s a huge, unearthly moonscape of a collapsed crater with fine volcanic sand stretching far.  As the sand age, some thousands of years from now, it’ll change sound, color, and composition. Unless vulcanos keep throwing new sand on top :-)
