The construction boom requires sand. Along the Niger river men dive down to the river bed, sometimes to depths of 3 m/10 ft to by hand fill buckets with sand and hauled it onto a boat. The work is tough and dangerous with strong currents, a risk of sand buckets getting loose and low visibility. Once at the shore women and men unload the sand by hand. The Niger River originates in the highlands of Guinea, flows across five countries and runs out via a massive sand delta into the Atlantic Ocean.
