The presence of sand can place vivid stories of human life at Kalambo Falls in Zambia in a timeline. Fine layers of sand caused by river floodings have preserved remains, tools and artefacts in a neat chronological sequence. Sand grains ability to tell when they last were heated or in light can also date findings. Kalambo Falls with the oldest findings of humans using fire 300 000 years back is one of the most important archaeological sites in southern Africa.
