A huge expanse of sand, the Oleshky Sands, stretch out inland from the Ukrainian coast of the Black Sea. Under it a fresh lake hides. Fine sand grains are easily picked up by winds creating sandstorms and tornados in the area. The sands used to be covered with plants until someone with a good intention of making a wildlife reserve brought in sheep that ate all the grass exposing the sand underneath. With winds the sands quickly grew. Today planted dense forest prevents spreading.
