Star-shaped sand grains are often crowned as the most beautiful sand grains of all. More than half of Tuvalu’s land is literally made up of it. The tiny star grains are exoskeletons of foraminifera, microscopic marine protozoa. Research shows that cultivating foraminifera to increase sand production could be one way to deal with rising sea levels in the Pacific. While environmental change is a real threat for the moment Tuvalu’s atolls and reef islands actually rise quicker than sea levels.
