Sand filters have been used for water purification since ancient times. While water flows through sand the many, many sand grains can capture particles by several different mechanisms. With sand easily available for most people it can also be used in singular households. Contamination of water by arsenic is a major problem in Asia. Many rural areas lack access to treated water. Studies in Vietnam have shown that simple household sand filters can reduce arsenic from groundwater by 95%.
