While Malaysia’s illegal sand mining is less deadly than India’s (where journalists, environmental activists, police and government officials are murdered for sand) it has a scandalous recent history with officials charged for accepting bribes and other favours in return for helping illegal sand businesses. Unsustainable sand mining threatens wildlife as well as villages and people living close to rivers and coasts. According to the Malaysian government, actions to preserve Malaysia’s sand is put in place.
