Local Sand Trivia

Ecuador is the first country ever to include Rights for Nature in its constitution. Its constitution states that nature, in all its life forms, has the right to right to exist, thrive, and undergo natural cycles of regeneration.  As a part of nature, sand has its own rights. Nature and ecosystems can be one of the parts of a court of law. This means, for example, that sand mining can be prosecuted, and the sand a lawyer can represent it. Previous legislation around the world assumes that someone owns nature and can use it more or less freely. A notable milestone occurred in 2011 when a court recognized a river’s rights following its violation due to road construction. A landmark ruling and the world’s first legal victory in support of the Rights of Nature.  That, my friend, is how you draw a line in the sand!
