Local Sand Trivia

The Curonian Spit, a thin 100 km/60 mile-long curved strip of sand separates the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. The Spit is divided between Lithuania and the Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared between the two. High drifting sand dunes have buried several villages including prehistoric Kaup, a major pagan trading centre still to be excavated. According to Baltic mythology a giant playing with sand on the seashore formed the split.
