Sand can not only sing, as some dunes do, but is used to produce a subtle sound when filled in maracas. The maraca is a traditional rhythmic instrument in Venezuela. They are used as a toy, as a spiritual tool by shamans and, in pairs as percussion instruments in many genres of Caribbean and Latin music. Maracas are traditionally made from hollow gourds, hard plants, filled with sand, beans, pebbles, or similar. Each filling produces a different sound. Sand gives a dreamy, swishing sound.
