Local Sand Trivia

Drawing protective or decorative symbols by pouring sand is an old custom around Kukawy, north-central Poland. So-called sand carpets were originally made indoors on dirt floors. The tradition moved outdoors when modern floors became popular. The protective or decorative symbols connected to religious feasts as Easter might be connected to pre-Christian belief. The tradition almost died out during communist rule after World War 2 but is now revived with sand pouring events decorating streets.
