Ancient Nasca people removed the top layer of dark stones to expose high contrasting light sand to create gigantic shapes and images obvious only from air or high places. The lines form humans, animals, plants and geometric patterns. To this day new lines are discovered. Many are formed in alignment with astrological movements. The why of the Nasca lines intrigues and puzzles 2000 years after they were formed. They are believed to have religious significance, but so far it is unknown how.
