Megapodes a.k.a. incubator birds incorporate material science, biochemistry, physics, and heavy construction to build warm incubators for its eggs along Palau’s archipelago. The bird digs out a huge hole, about 3 m/11 ft in diameter in sun-soaked sand in beachside forests. It fills the hole with leaves, covers it with a good layer of sand, and above that places yet a layer of leaves. The amount of decomposing leaves are regularly added or removed to keep the temperature of the eggs just right.
