The “Corridor Sands” discovered in 1997 near the Limpopo River in Mozambique is one of the largest heavy minerals deposits in the world Its ilmenite-rich sands, seen as dark stretches in lighter sand, are of high interest for industries. To mine heavy metal sands the sand is filtered separating heavier grains from lighter. Most of the ilmenite sand mined worldwide is made into titanium dioxide which is used as white paint pigment, as polishing abrasive, and for production of titanium metal.
