Some Plants use sand as armor. The perennial Silene Succulent that grows in Lebanon is a psammophorous, sand-carrying plant. Sand gets attached to its sticky surface and hairs. It’s not the visual camouflage that protects sand-covered plants from hungry herbivores but the sand works as a physical defensive shield. The same plant that animals as caterpillars, mice, and rabbits happily chew on will be avoided if they are covered in sand. Sand and teeth is seldom a nice combo!
