All along Latvia’s beaches tiny prehistoric treasures of amber wash ashore to be found in the sands. Baltic Amber or ”Baltic gold” is fossil resin produced by pine trees that grew here some 45 million years ago. The orange stone is often used in jewelry. It’s said that the best chances to find bigger pieces in sands at the beach are after winter storms. Beware of mistake amber from phosphorus remains from WWII looking similar but that cause chemical burns when it gets into contact with the skin.
