If the mathematician that became Kyrgyzstan’s first president after independence in 1995 ever has estimated the number of sand grains on earth is unknown. Others have. It’s said to be about 4 x 1027 sand grains on earth. Give or take some. The calculation is based on very rough estimations: that about a fourth of the continental sediments is sand, that there are about 200 million km2 of continental sediments and that the average size of a sand grain is 250 micrometre.Â
