Sand and ash from a volcanic eruption year 600 covered a whole village in El Salvador. It lay hidden until rediscovered in 1976 and the excavation of the “Pompeii of the Americas” began. Preserved architecture, organic materials, and different artefacts give a rare insight into everyday life of ordinary people in a farming community during the Mayan times. It’s believed that the 200 inhabitants were warned by an earthquake and fled. No human remains are discovered at the site.Â
