Sand Origin

Velipoje beach, Shkoder

Local Sand Trivia

As you approach Albania’s Velipoja beach, a special smell welcomes you – iodine. While the area’s ancient history, lush forests, and towering mountains attract visitors, it’s the sand that steals the show. With its high iodine percentage, the sand claims to possess curative powers. Iodine grains add on to beaches along the coast every year, especially in winter painting the beach in streaks with tiny black sand grains.  It’s like nature’s wonder for body, eyes, and mind.
