Light blue candles are stuck in the sand at beaches in Montevideo, Uruguay, on the yearly day of the sea goddess Yemanja, the source of all life. People come to show their gratitude for her blessings and fill the beach with candlelight. Some make small altars in the sand and bring offerings as flowers and fruit, thanking for the past and asking for good luck and health. As the sun sets people, many dressed in white, sing repetitive rhythms and dance between the flickering lights in the sand.
