If you’ve walked on sand you’ve likely noticed sand ripples and sand dunes formed from wind or water flowing over loose sand. Direction and speed of the water or wind determine whether there’ll be asymmetrical ripples from single direction flows as rivers or symmetrical from waves washing back and forth. Preserved ripples and dunes can indicate ancient weather and the environmental conditions in which they were formed. Rare giant ripples discovered in Tajikistan hold clues still to be examined.
