If you’ve ever walked on sand you’ve probably unknowingly stepped on a dragon. Mud dragons are tiny creatures with spines all the way down their backs making them look like dragons. No bigger than a grain of sand you’ll need to look closely to see one. More than 200 known species of them hide in beach sand all over, from cold oceans to tropical lagoons as around Micronesia’s many islands. The mud dragon eats microorganisms between the sand grains and helps keep sand fresh.
