Humans are not the only to know that sand can purify water. Some chimpanzees dig wells in sand close to open water and drink once water is filtered there. The behavior has been observed in a national park in Uganda directly bordering Congo Kinshasa and as animal life does not worry about national borders the behavior is likely the same on both sides.
