Black sand that fell like rain scared but did not harm when Mount Karthala erupted in 2005. The active volcano in the Comoros Islands has been and likely will again be more vicious. To identify areas at higher risk during an eruption a research team built miniature volcanoes and caused homemade eruptions with the same relative material properties as in real volcanoes. With sand and plaster as bedrock, ordinary syrup as magma the scientists could study ”a volcano eruption” under a CT scan.
