Local Sand Trivia

Översättning på gång, så länge den engelska: The Aralkum desert in Uzbekistan, the youngest desert on the globe, is the worst man-made environmental disaster ever. Before Soviet authorities in the 1960’ diverted two rivers for cotton irrigation, Aral Lake, formerly the world’s 4th biggest lake covered the area. Today abandoned docks and rusting fishing ships remain buried in vast areas covered with toxic salty sand. The sand contains accumulated pollutants crystallized with salt. Planting resilient trees in the area might be a way forward.
