Local Sand Trivia

All over Africa as in Rwanda you’ll see the Common Ostrich sleeping, kicking and even eating sand, to help grind up food. But you’ll not see any burying heads in it to hide. The myth of ostriches burying their heads in the sand is likely based on an optical illusion. Compared to its body the ostrich head is small and if digging in the ground or when lying down it may look like the head is buried in the sand. That its big eyeball is smaller than its brain might add to the myth.Â
